HIPAA INFORMATION NOTICE OF PRIVACY PRACTICES
At MGH Healthcare the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) is a federal program that requires that all medical records and other individually identifiable health information used or disclosed by us in any form, whether electronically, on paper, or orally are kept properly confidential. This Act gives you, the client significant new rights to understand and control how your health information is used. Failure to comply with HIPAA carries penalties for each violation.
HIPAA rules were mandated to ensure that personal medical information shared with healthcare personnel is protected. It restricts the use and disclosure of patient data including how it is stored, who can access it and how it is used. It gives patients new rights regarding protecting health information and more control over how and when it is used and by whom.
Any information orally recorded, on paper or sent electronically about a person's physical or mental health, services they receive and form of payment is protected.
Employees of MGN are not permitted to discuss intimate information about a patient or family with others.
Any complaint of privacy breaches by an employee of MGN will be documented as well as the resolution.
Failure to comply with the HIPAA rules will result in civil and criminal penalties including monetary penalty from $100,000 - $250,000 for each violation.
